Fiction

In terms of fiction, I encourage you to keep current, and read within your genre and outside of it as much as possible. When you are looking for comp titles for your pitch letters, you are going to want to stick to books released within the last five years. This doesn't mean you shouldn't read classics—you absolutely should—but you can't use them as a template for marketable writing today.

Imagine it like Shakespeare. The writing is beautiful and unparalleled, however, when it is read or watched today, it is either done in an academic setting, or the stories are updated—modern language, modernized situations, more relatable cinema-ready story structure. Read the classics and the foundation texts for your genre, just so you know what came before, and take all the inspiration you can from them, just don't emulate them—they were made for their time, not yours.
